Sticky Flowers and Flower Soup

Colin was out of town working for our anniversary, so he sent the most gorgeous arrangement via Floom, a flower delivery service, partnering with local, boutique florists! They lasted well over a week, but I always try and squeeze a few more uses out of them with the girls, since they’re always so interested and these were particularly unique.

STICKY FLOWERS

I snipped one of the gorgeous flowers and added to their snack table when it arrived. They had so much fun feeling its “spikes!” Once the flowers started to wilt, I put a few in a bowl and showed them how to pull out the petals and stick to contact paper. I added another sheet to the top to seal it and we hung them in the window. They really enjoyed peeling the petals off and pressing onto the paper. I’d eavesdrop and hear chatting about colors and beginning counting skills.

FLOWER SOUP

We froze flowers from the backyard into little cubes here when the girls were maybe a little older than a year! Time, you thief! Now that they are more imaginative and pretend to cook anything from guacamole to pizza to “lem-made” on the regular, I thought they would have fun melting large chunks of ice with flowers frozen inside. I filled one side of our Crate and Kids Sand and Water Table with water and put the chunks on the other side, along with some spoons, cups, and pans.

The girls were really into getting the ice to melt. It gets me so excited to expose them to vocabulary that we don’t usually use: “frozen, melting, solid, trapped,” and beginning science concepts like states of matter. Research shows that science is learned through hands on experiences and begins with curiosity, and early exposure will create those anchoring experiences and pathways for greater learning!

Also, that Ciala Co bow Eden is wearing. Gimme them ALL! Our most favorite!

Happy flower hunting and creating!
